b2d: a blog about (1) trying to understand how we work, in terms of health, fitness and well-being (2) sharing that understanding (3) trying to figure out or review best practice to optimize and operationalize (ie make it work) that practice for us.
It may also be a bit of a surprise to find that, under the shirts, not all athletes have the physiques we might expect. Some marathoners are more lean and muscular than tennis players. It's also interesting to see that there are similar body types for what might at first blush seem like very different sports.

We see the progress towards greater hypertrophy in women, same as in men: the more anaerobic the event, as seen in this photo of 100m
sprinter Torri Edwards, and olympic lifter Maryse Turcotte and Ruth Kasirye. Just look at how relaxed she is in that lift. Wow.

Here's why i think Precision Nutriton is the best process & place to learn about nutrition for health & body comp goals. And here's a free 40page+ ebook overview of the approach.

For folks interested in intermittent fasting, folks i trust keep recommedning Eat Stop Eat.
If you're wondering what zhealth is,
Gymboss
Lighter, smaller and less risky stuck on a rack at the gym or taped to a wall than your phone as an interval timer for things like,
oh, Viking Warrior Conditioning (overview here)
Lots of folks are interested in ketogenic dieting. The best reference out there is still Lyle McDonald's The Ketogenic Diet Book - helps you make an informed choice if you want to experiment with this approach.
if you work with athletes this is a nice way to be able to point out issues for the athlete to see, as well as to show how much they've improved with your tutelage via side by side comparisons of before and afters.
I also regularly break up the rice with cool stuff like Hemp Protein also from
True Nutrition
either the Extreme (of course extreme) Warrior Force protein or even wilder and somehow crazier just this side of visionary, are the "elite green" proteins. They have sample sizes, too. In GLASS jars. Seriously, i like this stuff a lot. But it's not quite something i can afford as an every day protein. But mm mm mm. weirdly wackily awesome.

very very interesting
You forgot the great champs of competitive eating.
Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi
I joke but, Kobayashi actually does a specific weight training program to help him improve as an eater. Its pretty cool.
I think your observation is a great one. I'd add that perhaps our expectation of what an athlete should look like may influence our collective perspective on how an athlete should train too? Perhaps many an athlete and many a coach is influenced to train for body composition because of this influence, even at the detriment to the success of the training.
Thanks all for stopping by.
Roland, i've been thinking about the inverse: 300 lb 5.9 squatters - women. guys who are likewise obese to pull really heavy weight. how is that "athletic"?
mortality rates of sumo wrestlers have been higher within all age ranges in japan . Their training nutrition leaves them more likely to have liver disease, despite the fact that they're at a 20% bf - during their careers.
Mind you what was that study awhile ago where olympic athletes were asked, if you could take a pill that guaranteed you gold, it wouldn't be detected, but you'd die the next day, would you take it? and the majority said "yes"?
yikes.
Have you seen this?

Thanks Steven. Nice ref.
